The first Virtual Golf Course on the Internet with Hole by Hole, Stroke by Stroke Streaming Video is live on the Inn of the Mountain Gods website; www.InnoftheMountainGods.com. The concept was to simulate television golf tournament coverage with aerial views of the holes, lines of ball flight and narration about playing each hole. Video with Audio offered the look and feel of television; the media golfers are most familiar with. The sound of a golf club striking a ball and the voice-over add a new dimension that’s missing from all the other course tours on the Internet. With the growth of Broadband to 55% of home Internet users, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, video on the Web has taken huge strides in quality from the jerky, postage-stamp size clips of just a few years ago. The clips of the 9th and 10th holes of the Inn of the Mountain Gods Championship Course are particularly good examples of how Windows Streaming Video shows the course in ways renderings and photos just can’t. The 9th Hole has a big drop from the tee to the landing area that the camera zooms down following the ball. The 10th Hole has an island landing area and a peninsula green showing the new hotel in the background across Mescalero Lake. Douglas Aurand, an Albuquerque producer of multimedia and virtual imaging for the Internet, conceived it after researching Golf Course websites. We found most online course tours were just still photos or an aerial-view artist’s rendering of the course. There was no sense of scale without people in the photos or renderings. A few tours used 360° images, but with no golfer there was no sense of which direction the green was from the tee. While discussing an iPIX Virtual Tour for the new Inn of the Mountain Gods hotel, we suggested the idea of a Virtual Golf Course Tour to Michael French, then Chief Operating Officer of the Inn of the Mountain Gods. The idea of doing something completely different from any other resort website interested him since they were re-inventing the southern New Mexico resort. Response from a web surfing golfer who stumbled on the Demonstration Website, www.VirtualGolfCourseTour.com, was “Your tour of the course is the best I have ever seen. I have played the course several times and you show it very well. Excellent website.” An iPIX Virtual Tour of the hotel we produced is also on their website, offering online visitors Full 360°x 360° previews of rooms, suites, restaurants, the lobby, indoor pool, ballroom, event center and casino. Many of the images offer spectacular views over Mescalero Lake and the snowcap on Sierra Blanca Peak. We’ve just delivered the Streaming Video and iPIX Image files for a tour of Ski Apache that will be navigated from a Trail Map.
